Scar revision can be accomplished with a number of different procedures and techniques which are designed to camouflage a scar in order to make it less conspicuous. Some scar revision procedures include laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, steroid injection, skin flap surgery, z-plasty, graft surgery, and surgical removal of a scar. Potential candidates for scar revision include men and women who are in good health, have realistic expectations, and are looking to improve the appearance of a scar. It’s important that patients understand that while scar revision can minimize the appearance of a scar, the scar often cannot be entirely removed.
Recovery after scar revision will depend upon the particular procedure used. Tape is often used after surgery to cover the scar and may remain in place for about a week. Surgical procedures often result in swelling and bruising. Some activities may need to be limited for a period of time after scar revision.
